Step 1. Jawebone UP - Let's get moving...

Five weeks ago today I became an UP enthusiast. I officially became a lover and a wearer of this crazy new ‘wearable technology’ they call the Jawbone UP.

What is wearable technology I hear you ask?

Well, in the words of the designer Jawbone themselves “UP™ is a system that takes a holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle. The wristband tracks your movement and sleep in the background. The app displays your data, lets you add things like meals and mood, and delivers insights that keep you moving forward”.

 

But how does it work?

The UP band is an intelligent computer wrapped around your wrist.

It’s comfortable enough to be worn 24/7 because the more you wear it, the more you track. You can wear it under your PJ’s to track your sleeping patterns. While at the same time it is strong enough to withstand a hardcore workout (and the shower that comes afterward). Day and night, UP is right there with you.

In other words you can track:

  1. How many steps you take in a day
  2. How many calories you consume
  3. How any calories you burned that day
  4. How many hours you slept for
  5. Along with a break down of how many hours you were in deep sleep compared to a light sleep.

Crazy huh? Having access to this level of information about myself has boosted my motivation ten fold! Its almost like an interactive game for your health. You are given daily goals to meet and sent motivational messages to encourage you to reach your targets. You can even connect with other members and help motivate each other.

When I first put the band on I was sceptical. I aimed to simply reach my sleep and step targets and ate whatever I wanted. Then I paired the UP app with one of my favourite food diary app’s ‘MyFitnessPal’ and now I can even track the % of fat Vs Carbs that I consume each day. Along with how many calories I burned going to a spin class a few times a week.

Having this device attached to my wrist has reminded me daily of my fitness goals; it has encouraged me, motivated me when I felt low, made me accountable for my actions, and it even helped inspire me to begin writing this blog!
